In a move that could redefine architectural boundaries, Saudi Arabia is planning to construct a groundbreaking 2km-tall skyscraper in Riyadh. This ambitious project, poised to become the world’s tallest building, is part of an 18 square kilometer development north of the capital city. The Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) is considering the project, with a site near King Khalid International Airport identified and a feasibility study conducted by Ernst & Young (EY).

The current tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, stands at 828 meters. A skyscraper reaching 2 kilometers would more than double this height, representing an unprecedented feat in engineering and construction. Contractors in the region estimate that building such a structure could cost around $5 billion.

This proposed tower is just one facet of a broader construction and megaproject boom underway in Saudi Arabia. The kingdom is heavily investing in transformative projects aimed at diversifying its economy and positioning itself as a global hub for innovation and tourism.

King Salman International Airport: A New Global Gateway

In addition to the towering skyscraper, Saudi Arabia is also set to develop King Salman International Airport, which aspires to join the ranks of the world’s largest airports. Covering approximately 57 square kilometers, this expansive airport will feature six parallel runways and incorporate the existing terminals named after King Khalid. This development underscores the kingdom’s ambition to enhance its infrastructure and connectivity.

Currently, the largest airport by area is King Fahd International Airport, also located in Saudi Arabia. The new King Salman International Airport aims to surpass this, solidifying the nation’s status as a key player in global aviation.

NEOM: The $500 Billion Megacity

Further cementing its vision for the future, Saudi Arabia is developing NEOM, a $500 billion megacity that promises to revolutionize urban living. One of the most ambitious components of NEOM is The Line, a 170km long, roadless city designed to prioritize sustainability and advanced technology. Built using artificial intelligence, The Line will offer a new model for urban planning, eliminating the need for cars and promoting a more environmentally friendly lifestyle.

In addition to The Line, NEOM will feature a luxury ski resort, showcasing the kingdom’s commitment to creating unique and diverse tourist attractions.

A Vision for the Future

These projects are part of Saudi Arabia’s broader Vision 2030 plan, which aims to reduce the kingdom’s dependence on oil, diversify its economy, and develop public service sectors such as health, education, infrastructure, recreation, and tourism. The development of a 2km skyscraper, along with significant projects like King Salman International Airport and NEOM, illustrates Saudi Arabia’s commitment to ambitious, forward-thinking initiatives that will shape the future of the nation and its place on the world stage.

Stay tuned for more updates on these incredible developments as Saudi Arabia continues to push the boundaries of innovation and construction.
